Every year as the holiday season follows around I am confronted with the same dilemma of a Christmas gift thought for my spouse. As he was growing up Christmas was a annoying time due to the amount of alcoholic beverage his father took and the conflicts that this got between his parents. When I was growing up Christmas was a joyful event loaded with family assemblies, great food and gift giving. I desired to help create better holiday memories for my husband by beginning customs of our own. One way I try is to follow up with a unique Christmas gift thought each year.
I sense that presents should be an item that the person desires but does not necessarily need. I do not believe that the holiday time is a time when you have to be practical with what you present to another person. This thought went for me with my mom. When I grew up we didn’t have very much money. My mom was forever on a difficult budget to meet the basic necessities for our family, but Christmas time was perpetually made special by the gifts that she would present us. She was not excessive in the Christmas gift thought that she gave each of us with, but the gifts were forever a luxury item rather than a practical item. When I was young this stood for extra doll garments, a piece of jewelry or a nice figure to complete my collection of Goebel bird figurines. My married man frequently received socks and underwear or other basic wear needs.
It is hard to find a Christmas gift thought for a man. My married man does not wear cologne or jewelry. He enjoys outdoor sports, but he purchases himself what he requires and his birthday is in the fall so I usually get him something for his outdoor hobbies at that time. A couple of years ago we started the custom of putting something in each other’s Christmas stocking all around the month of December. I found this to be a great idea of fun because I would purchase unique chocolates and other gourmet snack treats along with unique bundles of coffee for him. There have been years where his friends or brothers have given me a good Christmas gift thought, but this year I have yet to guess of anything.
During one of my shopping trips I have noticed an item that will be different and special. I’ve purchased nice bamboo wind chimes that made a great gift. He gave me so many beautiful pieces of jewelry packed into an animated music box and other special gifts all over the years, so I need to continue to surprise him. Many of the items that are advertised during the season as special gifts are too expensive. We have set spending limits each year so that we do not finish paying for Christmas gifts into the summertime. The price is not what makes these gifts special, but rather the thoughts and feeling of love in which they are given.
