The secret behind minimizing the effects of carbohydrate-rich food is to cut down the number of times you eat carbohydrates a day. Eating carbohydrates less often means there is less acid in contact with your teeth, and therefore, fewer occurrences of cavities. Some of the best teeth whitening products can also help with fighting cavities and protect your teeth after use.
Some dentists suggest cutting sugar out of your diet and replacing it with artificial sweetener. This is however, an idealistic expectation because when people cut sugar out of their diet, they tend to increase their fat intake; not a good option for their general health and wellbeing.
A more realistic way of dealing with carbohydrates is to ensure you eat them less frequently – a maximum of five times a day would suffice – and to be aware of what you snack on between meals. Also, if possible, try to brush your teeth or use your home teeth whitening kits after eating carbohydrates.
As a guideline, the stickier the food, the worse it is for your teeth. There’s also some bad news however: despite your best efforts to follow these guidelines, you may simply be more susceptible to caries than others. Some people seem to be able to eat what they like – while those who are more at risk, probably as a result of their genetic make-up, may find that even reducing their carbohydrate intake doesn’t help. It’s here that one has to go a step further, and make use of fluoride to help strengthen your teeth.
