You can tell Halloween is getting nearer when you begin to notice Halloween pumpkins appearing in front gardens and in autumnal decorations. Halloween may only occur once a year but the festival of pumpkin carving and setting out jack-o’-lanterns — as well as all the scary decor that Halloween is famous for — make the end of October a rival only to Christmas as an opportunity for domestic decoration.
Lucky for us that Halloween occurs during the fall with all its gorgeous rich autumnal color that is first found with the amazing show of the turning of the trees. Pumpkins participate in this colorful display with their quintessential orange colors that complement the seasonal palette so well. Many people decide to carve larger pumpkins, but don’t forget the smaller varieties that are edible: this is a time of year that makes use of tempting pumpkin recipes. We’re in the habit of eating pumpkin pie around Thanksgiving, but there a lot of other recipes that put to good use the pumpkin flesh that remains after our carving efforts, such as cakes, soup and bread.
If you’re planning to have a go at carving your pumpkins at home, there are specially made tools you can buy to make different shapes and help you remove the fleshy middle of the fruits. You always need to make sure to be careful when you’re working with sharp tools, of course — and let only the adults do all the cutting. Then the kids can entertain themselves decorating the pumpkins afterwards.
Pumpkins may seem resilient and hard wearing when they’re freshly bought, but in the end they will decay, especially when placed outside. To ensure that your ghoulish gourds have as long a display life as possible, don’t start carving them too early on in case they start drying up or going badcan sometimes make also a difference to place them somewhere cool and shady.
Are you pumpkin carving for the first time? If so, keep it simple at first and don’t try a pattern that’s too intricate. You’ll discover that the ghostly glimmer of a traditional jack-o’-lantern is really effective even with a basic pattern. If you’re more experienced or feel like having a go at something more original, you can print your pattern on paper and draw the shape onto the pumpkin’s surface with a marker or cut around an outline.
Lastly, don’t feel obliged to carve your pumpkin at all if you don’t want to. There are several amusing effects and designs you can achieve simply by decorating its surface. You can create eye-catching designs with paint and ink that will make your jack-o’-lanterns marvelously effective.
